Daily Program

The Kiwicare programme is about building and valuing connections between children, parents, cargivers, teachers, the centre and the the community so that the activities can be planned to match the children's learning and development through past, present and future experiences.

Start of morning
Haere Mai/Welcome everyone and settling children/Inside free play
The important link time with teachers and parents, caregivers communication and liaison while the children enjoy free play. The teachers listen for the children's emergent voice in order to decide on the next centre focus. Children experience an environment where they are affirmed as individuals (contribution goal 2) with staff respecting children's preferences and modelling non-discriminatory behaviour [DOPS 1c+5e].

Early morning
Focussing on maths, science, language and other curriculum areas
Children are encouraged to choose their morning tea time so that it does not inappropriately interrupt constructive play and learning activities. Resources are regularly changed so children can select activities according to the child's interests and strengths and to assist teachers to provide development of the children's individual goals and the centre's focus within the Te Whaariki strands (well-being, belonging, communication, exploration, contribution). Children experience an environment where they learn strategies for active exploration, thinking and reasoning (exploration goal 3). This enhances children's sense of themselves as capable people and competent learners [DOPS 4d].

Mid morning
Morning tea kai time/Mark morning roll
Children are encouraged to wash their hands before morning tea. Hooroi o ringaringa. Children experience an environment where their health is promoted. (well-being goal 1) and [DOPS 5a]. The children are monitored during this time to eat a food selection that allows the centre to hold the Healthy Heart award. They are able to choose from a selection of appropriate nutritional food and sit and interact with friends.

Free play and social time
Children experience a supportive environment where they are affirmed as individuals (contribution goal 2) with staff respecting children's preferences and modelling non-discriminatory behaviour [DOPS 1c+5e]. Te Waa Whakapai - Tidy up in and outdoor environment.

Group sharing time proACTIV board
Children are captivated by the large, bright and colourful interactive white board with interesting sounds and exciting learning resources all of which grab the attention of even the most reluctant learner.

Under the guidance of the teachers the board enables and assists children's logical and conceptual thinking in relation to a virtually infinite range of current affairs topics, drama, science, music, literacy, maths games, phonetics, comedy and creates a high fun factor all around. The children can find information to build their own resources, stories, learning strategies. Sessions are made active when children take turns to write on the board, record their voices into stories and add their own pictures [DOPS 5b].

Lunch time - Kai time.
Children are encouraged to wash their hands and eat healthy food together. Children's health is promoted [DOPS 5a]. Medicines are administered and checked daily and documented in medicine book.

Early afternoon
Clean faces, toileting. Sleep time - Moe time
Sleep for younger children and rest/quiet time activities, ie. reading books or individual quiet play for older children. [DOPS 5a].

Transition to school programme (4 1/2 years only)
Inside/outdoor programme - activities for children. Children experience an environment where they learn strategies for active exploration, thinking and reasoning (exploration goal 3). This enhances children's sense of themselves as capable people and competent learners [DOPS 4d]. [Parent comment: "When my child went to school the teacher congratulated me on the great grounding in reading and maths he received at Kiwicare."]

Early afternoon
Children awake - children are encouraged to pack away sleep belongings in individual bags. They are fully dressed, and toileting checked. Children are offered water to drink.

Music/dance/drama/sports and visual arts.
Teachers guide the children in exploring their creativity and physical coordination and development through a range of individual and group activities. Obstacle courses, balls, bikes, trucks and an adventure playground are created for use in new ways each day by the children. Teachers use each child's creativity to assist with each child's individual goals. Where there is a forthcoming concert/sport day/presentation this time is used to develop the programme in consultation with the children whose ideas and input are encouraged.

Mid afternoon
Free choice afternoon tea - Kai time/Mark afternoon roll.
Children are encouraged to wash their hands. Hooroi o ringaringa. Children experience an environment where their health is promoted (well-being goal 1) and [DOPS 5a]. The children are encouraged during this time to eat a range of healthy food and sit with friends.

Late afternoon
Toileting checks and grooming. Tidy up in/outside/Te Waa Whakapai.

Mat time/quiet activities/proACTIV Board
Teachers and children share an interactive story time to capture the children's interest and attention by including opportunities for the children to lead, give presentations and contribute to discussions.

Free play, children's choice.
Teachers and parents/caregivers communication and liaison with the children enjoying free play with the children's emergent voice. Children experience an environment where they are affirmed as individuals (contribution goal 2) with staff respecting children's preferences and modelling non-discriminatory behaviour [DOPS 1c+5e]. Children's play is valued as meaningful learning [DOPS 5e].

Home time Haere ra!
The Kiwicare daily programme for your child is based on the childcare curriculum (Te
Whaariki goals) and Ministry Of Education's Statement of Desirable Objectives [DOPS]. The staff are proud to have spent the day promoting children's daily learning and development.

Please feel free to take your child's artwork and portfolio book home. We are pleased if you could write your and your child's responses in the feedback sections.
